For those of you who like numbers, I’m working on chapter 28/43. The draft is 70,000 words long (230 pages), shaping up to be over 100,000 in total (330 pages). Considering that I started this draft in January of last year, it will probably be late 2026 before it is done.
So when will you be able to find Mobius in bookstores, 2027? Most likely not. For one, I already know it will need a third draft. For two, I’ve started thinking about the business side of being a novelist. While I am confident I will one day strike up a deal with an agent and a publishing company, I don’t know if this is the right book to do it with.
Brandon Sanderson is one of my biggest role models. I love the way he mixes spiritual themes with scientific worldbuilding in his magical fantasy stories. I also admire his positive attitude and the energy he brings whenever he appears in public. His advice for authors breaking into traditional publishing is to start with stand-alone novels with sequel potential. Mobius, whether fortunately or unfortunately, is the beginning of a series, making it less likely to work out as a first published novel.
I’m thinking of taking a break from Mobius between drafts 2 and 3. In the meantime, I will try out some other novel ideas that work better as stand-alones. I have no shortage of ideas; my problem is choosing one to focus in on and write a whole book with. I’m currently thinking of a renaissance fantasy with an early science vibe, towers full of gears and prisms, a character made of clockwork, celestial and arcane materials, and of course all of it supplemented by my knowledge of advanced physics. That is only one option out of several though, so who knows?
That’s it for this update!
