March Progress Report 2023

Hi Everyone,

We all know of creators who make promises and then fall off the face of the map, leaving us wondering, “Are they actually doing any work?” I can’t stand that. So to avoid becoming one of those, I’ve decided to give regular updates on my progress. In addition to showing all of you that I am indeed moving toward an audience-ready novel, it keeps me accountable and motivated knowing the entire internet will judge me if I slack off. 😆

So let’s start with where I was last month when I made the big announcement. I came in sitting on about 15 years of developing the story and universe that evolved into Mobius as it is now, as well as practice-writing a dozen or so other stories. The past couple years, I’ve focused on Mobius as my singular project, digging in and figuring out the soul of this book that keeps me coming back to it, shows me when something is not right, and sets it apart from other books as a unique and relevant story.

Last summer, I joined a local writing group that meets several times a week, and it’s been really good for my work ethic. I wrote and submitted prototype versions of the first five chapters to them for critique, and their kind and honest feedback sculpted the sample chapter you can find on this website.

The lion’s share of my progress this month has been to flesh out the outline. I wrote 10,000 words of solid plotting, getting my viewpoint character stories straight and an in-depth outline up through Act II. After that, I tweaked the early chapters to line up with the new outline, though they still need work before I’ll be ready to share them in public.

Currently, I have seven chapters drafted. This coming month, I’ll aim to write 4 new chapters. That should put me on track to finish the draft in November, giving me leeway for the inevitable rise of complications.
